Sister Paintings - Bedroom Wall - Birdsong Lane Art

Sister Paintings - Bedroom Wall

The homeowner who requested these two pieces loves texture and bling. One of her favorite paintings in her home is an abstract blue piece of art by Claire Desjardins. After a renovation, she had some extra MDF shelves, and she gave me two to paint on.

What a challenge!

First, I sanded down the MDF so that paint would adhere. Then, I gessoed the MDF.

I decided to try out a new technique - never easy for custom order.

Instead of adding texture in the layers after my base painting, I decided to lay down modeling paste on top of the gesso. Once the modeling paste was dry, I blew out my first bloom painting.

I discovered how difficult it is in fluid art to know exactly where the texture is underneath a thick layer of paint. After blowing out the paint and then spinning and tilting, I started to see the textured areas. From there, I had to trust that my paints didn't have any gloops in them.

And it worked!

Here's the first painting framed:

While I started to think through Painting No.2, and debate whether I was going to re-do this one, it's new owner came over and took the painting home with her. Every day, she would tell me how much she LOVED this painting. So, even though I might have scraped and re-done this piece, it was a reminder that sometimes, the life and movement that a painting gives is often so much better than my own critical eye.

Painting No. 2 proved to be more of a challenge. I wanted to use the same technique and color layering. But I also wanted to improve upon the first one. I ended up scraping my first attempt, which also resulted in scraping off the texture. I also learned to mark my texture areas with a little Sharpie marker dot on the corners where the texture was. That helped guide me through the paint layers as I spun and tilted canvas No. 2.

And here's the sibling:

And here they are together on their bedroom wall.
